Autumn Spice Sugar Scrub with Essential Oils

Autumn Spice Sugar Scrub with Essential Oils
Do you find that when the weather turns cooler your skin gets a little drier? This is totally the case for me especially when I spend countless hours at the kitchen sink washing dishes with my hands in hot water. ( I love to cook from scratch so I tend to make a lot of dishes for myself :) This simple sugar scrub recipe takes minutes to make and does wonders for my dry hands and is also great to use in the shower too.

So why make your own?
Most of the sugar scrubs, hand soaps and other scented bath and body products are all filled with a host of toxic chemicals such as synthetic fragrance, parabens, and petrochemicals. Not sure what petrochemicals are? These are are
chemical compounds, which can be made from oil, natural gas, coal or other sources. Petrochemicals are the byproduct of the oil refining process. I don't know about you but I don't want anything that is a left over from refining crude oil on my skin!

So why not try making a scrub with things you already have in the kitchen. Keep you skin soft, smooth and smelling like the warm scents of fall with this easy DIY sugar scrub.

Here is what you will need:
4 oz. mason jar
1/2 tsp organic vanilla extract
1/2 cup organic sugar
1/4 cup organic cold pressed coconut oil
2 drops Cinnamon Bark essential oi
6 drops Clove essential oil

  1. Add add ingredients to a mixing bowl and stir well to combine. (I find it easy to use a spatula and kind of mash the coconut oil into the sugar)

  2. Test a small amount on your hand to see if the scent is to your liking. You can always add a few more drops of essential oils for a stronger scent.

  3. Add scrub to an airtight mason jar.

  4. Use on hands and body to slough off dry skin.

  5. Now this step it totally optional but me being crafty I want it to look cute in my bathroom :) Add a little twine or ribbon, a few cinnamon sticks, and  a cute label (I made this in less than 5 minutes on Avery) and you are done! This makes a great hostess gift or a birthday gift.

Autumn Spice Room Spray

Autumn Spice Room Spray
With fall just around the corner everything is pumpkin spice! Don’t get me wrong I love pumpkin spice and the spicy scents of fall but what I don’t like is the synthetic fragrance! Those yummy smelling fall candles and room sprays come with hidden toxins. The big one is synthetic fragrance which is made up of thousands of undisclosed chemicals to protect "trade secrets".  Chemicals in fragrance have been linked to asthma and other respiratory issues. But that's not all. Candles made from paraffin wax are filled with harmful toxins that actually create pollution in the air you breathe. (click here to read more about synthetic fragrance) So before you light those candles this year why not try making something that will smell just as amazing that is safe for you and your family.

This super simple recipe only has a few ingredients and essential oils.

Here is what you will need:
4 oz. glass spray bottle
2 oz. distilled water
2 oz. neutral spirit (witch hazel or vodka work great)
Pinch of salt
6 drops Cinnamon Bark essential oil
5 drops Nutmeg essential oil
5 drops Clove essential oil

1. Add a pinch of salt to the glass bottle

2. Add essential oils. (The reason for the salt is that it helps disperse the essential oils throughout the water rather than sitting on top)

3. Carefully add distilled water and neutral spirit being very careful not to overfill the bottle. We don't want to lose any of those precious essential oils :)

4. Add spray top and shake well

5. Now this step it totally optional but me being crafty I want it to look cute in my bathroom :) Add a little twine, a few cinnamon sticks or some fall colored pick from the floral section at the craft store. Add acute label (I made this in less than 5 minutes on avery) and you are done! This makes a great hostess gift for the next gathering you attend.

What is great about essential oils is that you can play around and try out different combinations to get the scent that you want. Some of my favorite oils for fall are:
Cinnamon Bark
Clove
Nutmeg
Thieves
Orange
Ginger
Cardamom

Essential Oil Infused Fall Spice Tea

Essential Oil Infused Fall Spice Tea

Now that it’s September it’s time for the spicy scents of fall and a warm cup of tea. Yes I know it’s not technically fall yet but for me September 1st is the changing of the season :) I love the spicy scents of Cinnamon, Clove and Nutmeg and I love them even more in a good cup of herbal tea.

Traditionally I have purchased various pumpkin spice and fall tea blends but as I stated to read more labels and become more concerned about what is in my products, I started finding things I did not like in my tea like artificial flavors and additives. Yuck! So in true me fashion this lead me down a rabbit hole researching. So let me give you the 411 on conventional teas before I give you a great solution for my favorite spiced fall beverage.

What’s in most teas? Conventional teas on the market are filled with hidden toxins such as pesticides, natural and artificial flavors, GMO’s and the tea bags they are in are even worse! Chlorine bleach and plastics that can leach from those cute little pyramid shaped sachets. You can skip all of these hidden toxins by infusing your own organic loose leaf tea with high quality, therapeutic grade essential oils made for dietary consumption like the Young Living Vitality line.

So my newest experiment was to try and replicate one of my favorite pumpkin spice rooibos teas. I started by adding 4 drops each of Cinnamon Bark Vitality, Clove Vitality and Nutmeg Vitality to ½ cup of organic rooibos tea. I then added 2 tbsp of dried organic orange peel for a little orange zest. (See my blog on infusing tea for instructions).

Once the tea has infused for a few days add 1 tsp to a tea steeper and steep for 10 minutes. I have to say I nailed it on replicating the flavor naturally.

Recipe:
½ cup organic rooibos tea
2 tsp dried organic orange peel
5 drops Cinnamon Bark Vitality
5 Drops Clove Vitality
5 Drops Nutmeg Vitality

Add essential oils to glass mason jar and swirl to coat jar. Add in tea and orange peel and put on lid. Swirl the tea around in the jar to pick up all of the oils on the sides of the jar. Each day for 3 days give the jar a few good shakes to mix. Once tea is infused steep and enjoy!

I'll be serving this at my upcoming class this Saturday!
