Essential Oil Infused Healing Salve

Essential Oil Infused Healing Salve
A few weeks ago my little one took a tumble and fell face first on a tree root while we were out hiking.  It was a small gash but man do those head wounds bleed! I knew we needed to break out the essential oils to help heal and prevent a scar so I got to mixing and here is the recipe we have been using on her forehead and it is looking great!

Supplies
3 oz. carrier oil (I chose Calendula that I had been infusing but you could use coconut oil or another carrier oil too)
2 oz. of Shea Butter
1 oz. Organic Beeswax
A few drops Vitamin E oil
30 drops Frankincense essential oil
15 drops Helichrysium essential oil
15 drops Lavender essential oil

Directions:
1. In a double boiler (I used a glass pyrex bowl over a pot of boiling water but a mason jar works well too) boil water.
2. to the glass bowl or jar add in Shea Butter and beeswax. Stir until melted.
3. Add in Calendula oil and stir well to combine.
4. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
5. Add in essential oils and stir well to combine.
6. Pour in a glass jar or reuse a salve container. I use the tin in the photo and then made some little travel size ones to take on the go.
7. Once cool apply lid.
8. Apply to skin for cuts and scrapes, stressed skin, scars etc.

Why Calendula?
Calendula some from the marigold flower and has natural antibacterial properties that might make it useful in healing wounds. I have also heard calendula oil used for diaper rash and eczema. To make caledula oil you need dried flowers and a carrier oil. I used sunflower oil. Depending on how much calandula oil you want fill a mason jar about 3/4 of the way (i used a 4oz. jar) and then fill with carrier oil of choice. Let sit for about a month or more (mine was infusing for quite a while). Then strain out the flowers and filter through a coffee filter and you have calendula infused oil.

Helichrysum has a sweet, earthy aroma and provides many benefits for the skin, including reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It has cleansing properties when applied to the skin and historically the oils from this flower have been used to help stop bleeding, reduce scaring and regenerate tissue.

Frankincense essential oil has a sweet, honey-like, and woody fragrance. It has a broad range of uses, from enhancing spiritual and meditative practice to use in beauty routines. Frankincense can help you maintain the appearance of radiant skin, has the ability to smooth the appearance of healthy skin and can reduces the appearance of uneven skin tones.

Outdoor Essential Oil DIY Recipes

Outdoor Essential Oil DIY Recipes
With the warm weather and sunshine here we have all been spending a lot more time outdoors. But something else I have noticed is that the bugs have made their return too... You can keep the pests away using natural, toxin free options with essential oils. So skip the harmful DEET and other toxins and make your own or if you are not into the DIY thing Young Living has a great option that is ready to go :)

So why don't I want to use regular bug spray from the store?
Conventional insect repellents contain a lot of toxic ingredients with the main one being DEET. DEET has been found toxic to the central nervous system and can cause skin irritation. "Although studies indicate mixed results, there is some evidence that DEET contains carcinogenic properties that can produce dangerous effects when inhaled or applied to the skin."(Dr. Axe).  So when spraying insect repellents you risk the chance of breathing this harmful toxin into your lungs.  To be on the safe side I just avoid it all together :) Click here to read more on the dangers of DEET. There are safe alternative solutions to keep you and your family bug free this season.

Bug Away Spray
10 drops Citronella
10 drops Lemongrass
10 drops Lavender
10 drops Tea Tree
10 drops Geranium
10 drops Kunzea

  1. Add essential oils to a 4 oz spray bottle.
  2. Add 2 oz. distilled water and 2 oz. neutral spirit (witch hazel or vodka work well)
  3. Add spray top and shake well to combine.
  4. Spray on exposed skin, clothing and even pets to keep the bugs away.
Young Living’s Insect Repellent is tested to repel mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas using only 100 percent naturally derived, plant-based ingredients. Formulated without DEET, parabens, fillers, phthalates, petrochemicals, animal-derived ingredients, synthetic preservatives, synthetic fragrances, or synthetic colorants It rubs easily into skin without a greasy or sticky finish. Also comes in insect repellent wipes that are easy to take on the go. Safe to use on the entire family.

*Tip add this to an empty 15 ml oil bottle and add a roll-on top for easy on the go application. I use this to easily apply it to my little one :)

Citronella has a slight citrus scent. Its versatility makes it a great household product to add to your beauty routine or to refresh indoor and outdoor spaces.

Some ways to use Citronella
Apply topically before and during outdoor activities.
Use Citronella's bright scent to sweeten a custom fragrance or diffusion blend.
Apply topically to refresh and moisturize skin.
Use as an alternative to deodorant. Combine with Tea Tree essential oil for added strength.
Create a DIY floating candle bowl to create a peaceful ambiance and pleasant aroma during outdoor parties.

Kunzea has a spicy, woodsy aroma to uplift any environment. With properties that help soothe fatigued muscles and work to reduce the appearance of blemishes when applied topically, Kunzea will be a new household staple. Use alongside Purification® to help purify the air or instead of Tea Tree for a more pleasant aroma and milder sensation when applied topically. Historically aborigines would sleep under these plants at night to ward off biting insects and ticks. Use in diffuser to purify and cleanse the air. Pairs great with Purification.

If you one of those buggers happens to bite you, you can help stop the itch with this easy DIY Itch Stick roll-on. Perfect to take with you on the go.

Itch Stick Roll-on
20 drops Purification
10 drops Lavender
10 drops Peppermint

1. Add essential oils to a 10 ml glass roll-on with a stainless steel roller ball top.
2. Fill the rest of the way with carrier oil. I like fractionated coconut oil or the V-6 Vegetable oil complex.
3. Apply to bites to soothe the itch.

This blend is made up of six essential oils for the ultimate weapon against odors. Citronella, Lavandin, Lemongrass, Rosemary, Myrtle, and Tea Tree work together to create a refreshing, bright scent that keeps you and your family happy and comfortable. Purification soothes skin when applied topically, clears the air of unwanted odors, and freshens musty and stale areas with its lively scent. Add 10-12 drops of purification to a 4 oz. spray bottle with 2 oz. distilled water and 2 oz. neutral spirit and spray the room to keep odors away.

Oils & Crystals for Emotional Balance & Grounding

Oils & Crystals for Emotional Balance & Grounding
Right now many people are having some tough emotions. Feelings of fear and anxiety and feeling trapped to name a few. These emotions are closely related to our root chakra (located at the base of our spine) If you are not familiar with the chakras or energy centers, I'll give you a brief explanation. We have seven main chakras located along spine such as root (base of spine), Sacral (2" below belly button), Solar Plexus (2" above belly button), Heart (center of breast bone), Throat (the little indent at the base of your neck), Third Eye (between eyebrows) and Crown (located on the top of the head). Each chakra is associated with a color, different emotions and are related to different organs in the body. Trauma, stress and tension can throw our chakras out of wack manifesting in dis-ease in the body.

When our root chakra is blocked we can feel fear, go into survival mode, feel unstable, and maybe even unsafe. Essential oils and crystals can be used to hep support the chakras and help us re-balance them. I am going to share a few essential oils and crystals that I have personally been using to help remain grounded and calm during this time.

Smokey Quartz
Smokey Quartz is a very grounding stone and is associated with the root charka which is located at the base of the spine and the crown chakra located at the top of the head. It offers protection from energy that does not serve our highest good by transmuting it and grounding it into the earth. Carry a small tumbled stone in your pocket (near the root chakra) throughout the day. This stone can also amplify positive energy and help you to connect to higher spiritual guidance. It works well with other grounding stones such as Shungite, Black Tourmaline, and Obsidian.

Frankincense is very calming and grounding essential oil with an earthy, uplifting aroma. Apply to wrists and pressure points to support emotional balance. It can be used to increase spiritual awareness in meditation and prayer when applied or diffused. I like to apply a few drops to the crown of my head after washing my hair. The heat from the blow dryer diffuses the calming scent of Frankincense throughout the room. Frankincense may also be applied to the bottom of the feet to enhance feelings of being grounded.

Diffuse Frankincense during meditation or prayer to align yourself with compassion, inner peace, tolerance, and love. Place a piece of smokey quartz between your feet to enhance grounding.

Affirmations
"I am secure and grounded"
"I am peace, love, compassion and kindness"

Amethyst
Amethyst is a great stone for protection and purification by clearing one’s energy field of negative influences and attachments. It is associated with the 6th chakra (third eye) and 7th chakra (crown) and can support intuition and insight, connecting to your higher self, and manifestation, making it great to hold in your left hand (receiving hand) or placed between the eyebrows if lying down during meditation. Amethyst can be helpful for those working through addictions by bringing clarity to the mind and balancing the nervous system and brain.

Amethyst is a natural stress reliever and resonates well with Lavender essential oil. Lavenders' aromatic influence is very calming and relaxing, promotes consciousness, love, peace and a general sense of well-being. Lavender has been used to promote rest and relaxation and also has a spiritual frequency which can help to open the third eye chakra.

A great way to use amethyst and lavender essential oil together is to put a drop of lavender on a polished amethyst stone and massage the oil into the stone while meditating. The massaging can give you something to focus on while the scent of lavender will calm the mind and body. You can do this while repeating one the affirmations below.

Affirmations

“I am at ease in my mind, body, and spirit.”

“I am purified, uplifted, and protected through my connection to the Divine. “

Shungite

Did you know that Shungite is the most powerful neutralizer of EMF’s?  Electromagnetic Frequencies (EMF’S) are emitted by our laptops, cell phones, and other electronic devices we use everyday. Place a piece of Shungite in front of your laptop or other electronic devices while using them or carry a piece in your pocket. Ferromagnetic stones like Shungite, Black Tourmaline, Hematite and Pyrite are very grounding. Ferromagnetism is the basic mechanism by which certain materials (such as iron) form permanent magnets, or are attracted to magnets. The theory is that the core of Mother Earth is a big ball of iron so working with stones that contain iron can help ground you to earth. Other things you can do if you are feeling out of sorts and don’t have a grounding stone like Shungite on hand is to go outside and stand barefoot in the grass or hug a tree. I know this may sound silly but this really will help ground you and bring you back to center. Shungite is a great stone for cleansing and aligns all body cells, dispels negativity, and opens one to receive spiritual light. You can make a healing gem elixir using Shungite by placing a polished stone in water for several hours. It transforms the water into biologically active substances, removing harmful microorganisms and pollutants.

Is a blend of White Fir, Black Spruce, Ylang Ylang, Pine, and other essential oils. It complements feelings of stability, clarity, and spirituality. Grounding’s warm and entrancing aroma can create an atmosphere that is perfect for finding self-awareness and confronting negative emotions. Diffuse or apply it topically as you stabilize and ground your day and work to cope with life’s daily challenges. Grounding has a powerful aroma that helps create a relaxing, calming, and comforting atmosphere when diffused. Apply to the back of neck or temples or the bottoms of the feet.

Hold a piece of Shungite and diffuse or apply Grounding during meditation while stating one of the affirmations below.

Affirmations
“I open myself to absolute purification, and the entry of Light into every atom of my being.”
"I am clear, pure, and balanced in my mind, body and spirit."

* I have two palm stones  that I use daily for grounding and to balance my energy. One is Shungite and the other is Soapstone. I hold the Shungite in my left hand and the Soapstone in my right for at least 10 minutes while I meditate and it is amazing how calm I feel afterwards.

I hope that these tips can be useful to you during this time. Meditation, yoga, and using my essential oils and crystals have really helped me to remain calm during this time and have allowed me to really look deep within myself and understand what is most important to me in life. This time at home can be a great time to really to some self study and look inward.
Together we can change the world one kind thought or action at a time :)
Namaste (Meaning: The light in me sees and honors the light in you)
Michelle

  2. Fill the rest of the way with carrier oil (fractionated coconut oil, olive oil, jojoba oil etc.)

*Try adding the oils in either roll-on recipe to your diffuser so the entire family can breathe easy.

Wellness Tip
Do you tend to get pain and congestion in your sinuses during the spring? That congestion can be caused by inflammation in your sinuses.
Take a tablespoon of raw local honey with a drop or two of Copaiba Vitality Essential Oil. Try finding it at your local farmers market but you can also find raw honey at Costco. The closer the honey is made to your community the better the effectiveness.

According to Dr. Axe "Raw honey contains bee pollen, which is known to ward off infections, provide natural allergy relief and boost overall immunity. Honey’s ability to prevent allergies is based on a concept called immunotherapy. The bees in your neighborhood go from flower to flower collecting pollen that causes you to suffer, but when a you consume local raw honey, you also consume that same offending local pollen. After some time, an allergy sufferer may become less sensitive to this pollen that previously caused problems and experience less seasonal allergy symptoms.

Paring local honey with the power of Copaiba can be very beneficial. Steam distilled from the gum resin of the Brazilian copaiba tree, Copaiba Vitality essential oil has a robust, earthy flavor with notes of honey. When taken internally, it can promote overall wellness and may be an important part of a daily health regimen. Historically resin from the copaiba tree has been used for inflammation, to support the respiratory system when applied topically and sinusitus.

Breath Easy
Another great way to help with Seasonal Wellness is to add a few drops of essential oils like R.C. or the oils in the recipes above to a scent stone, pop it in the shower away from the direct stream of water and as the shower steams up it will diffuse the healing benefits of these essential oils into the air so you can breath easy.

Check out my blog post for the full recipe.

Essential Oils
Let's learn a little more about some of the essential oils in the recipes I shared.

Cypress essential oil has a fresh, herbaceous aroma that can promote a sense of security and grounding. Historically the evergreen branches from the cypress tree have been used to support the urinary system, perspiration, menstruation, respiratory support and to support the liver. Try mixing cypress with carrier oil and apply to the chest for support.

Eucalyptus Radiata essential oil comes from the leaves of an evergreen tree native to Australia. Eucalyptus Radiata oil promotes a stimulating and rejuvenating environment anywhere it’s diffused. The soothing scent makes Eucalyptus Radiata the perfect addition to any bedtime routine when applied to the chest or back. Historically the leave from the eucalyptus plan have been used to support the respiratory system & cough, for wounds to prevent infection, and inflammation of the of nasal mucous membrane to name a few.

Lavender essential oil has a scent that’s a wonderful blend of fresh, floral, clean, and calm. Lavender may help cleanse and soothe minor skin irritations, can be soothing to the skin after a day in the sun, may help reduce the appearance of blemishes, and supports aging skin. Historically lavender flowers have been used for allergies, as
an antihistamine, to reduce inflammation and so many other uses.

DIY Spring Cleaning Recipes

DIY Spring Cleaning Recipes
Spring is here! Warmer weather is coming so I always like to get my spring cleaning done early so I can enjoy being outside and not inside cleaning. If you have kids at home maybe you can even get them to help out too! Whats great about these cleaning recipes is that they are plant based but super effective so they are safe for the kids to handle.

So you might ask why should I make my own cleaners? Most cleaners on the market are filled with toxic chemicals & synthetic fragrance. These scents are harmful to the respiratory system when inhaled. So that "clean" house smell can actually be very harmful to you and your family. These DIY cleaners are safe, non toxic and very effective.

 Deep Cleaning Scrub Recipe
1/2 cup baking soda
1 TBSP unscented liquid Castile soap (I like Dr. Bonner's)
4 drops Purification essential oil
4 drops Lemon essential oil
Air tight glass jar

Add ingredients to a mixing bowl and stir well. It will have the consistency of frosting. Use to clean sinks, get soap scum off showers and bath tubs, clean grout, great for stainless steel cookware too!
Click here to watch a video of my daughter and I making it :)

DIY Wood Polish
1/2 cup olive oil
1/2 cup white vinegar
15 drops Lemon essential oil
8 oz. or larger spray bottle

Add all ingredients to the spray bottle and shake well to mix.
Use on wood furniture to give it a beautiful shine.
*Tip make you kitchen cabinets shine. Use a little of the deep cleaning scrub to remove any grime on cabinets then polish them to a shine with the wood polish. My kitchen cabinets have seen better days but I am always amazed how great they look after a good polish with this recipe.

Cleaning Tips!
Next time you clean and wash your vacuum filters add a few drops of Thieves or Purification essential oil to the filter. When you vacuum next time you will have an aromatherapy experience all while cleaning the air in your home.
Is your carpet stinky? Before you vacuum add 10-15 drops of Purification essential oil to 1 cup of baking soda. Mix and shake over carpets. Let sit for an hour and vacuum it up and smells will be gone.

DIY Glass and Window Cleaner
3 cups distilled water
1 tsp white vinegar
10- 15 drops Lemon essential oil
24 oz. or larger spray bottle

Add all ingredients to  a spray bottle (I get those really big ones from the $ store). Shake well to mix and use to clean windows & mirrors. I Like to use a microfiber cloth so I can really get the windows shiny. Works great on the outside of the windows too.

Mold & Mildew Cleaner
3/4 cup white vinegar
8 oz. spray bottle

Add all ingredients to a spray bottle and shake well. This works amazing on the walls in my bathroom. From time to time we get mold on the walls and ceiling above the shower and this takes care of it very well.
